In 2011, USGIF Member PIXIA Corp. developed the Wide-Area Motion Imagery (WAMI) Web Services Specification, which provides universal data access and dissemination. In 2012, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) adopted PIXIA’s WAMI Best Practice Document as an official OGC standard.

As a result of this achievement and others the company has earned in its 16-year history, PIXIA was presented the USGIF 2013 Industry Achievement Award. The USGIF Awards Program annually recognizes exceptional work from throughout the GEOINT Community.

“It was a tremendous validation for both our employees and company to be recognized for the years of hard work,” said Rudi Ernst, PIXIA co-founder and CEO. “Being recognized on stage at the GEOINT Symposium in front of our community has proven to be invaluable.”  

Used internationally, the PIXIA-developed WAMI standard advances interoperable solutions to enable web, wireless, and location-based services to access large volumes of data in less time.The company’s efforts have paved the way for a future user environment where analysts have access to all data available and can share knowledge back to the community to enable faster and better-informed decision-making.

“This achievement is the core of our belief and decades-long support of advancing standards and interoperable solutions that enable making exquisite sensors part of the mainstream so any intelligence agency can access this data immediately—just like the IC ITE vision has for its framework of collaboration,” Ernst said. “WAMI is a great example of our fundamental belief to enable multiple people collaborating on the same data source.”

PIXIA encourages other companies and organizations to apply for USGIF Awards.

“The GEOINT Community is growing and becoming much more sophisticated,” Ernst said. “Having an awards mechanism that recognizes innovation and advancing the [GEOINT] tradecraft is a great motivator for companies to continue pushing their technology.”
